Shadowplay
shows my approximation to a particular exhibition space at galerie weisser elefant. Berlin. It refers to a temporary situation in this room: the shadowplay in November, when the floodlight of the football field outside in Auguststrasse paints a beautiful shadow onto the walls. I spent time in this room in November and tried to gain an idea of the qualities of the space. Finally I took some photographs, that became the base for the drawing.
After I chose a size for the photo base, the second approximation pahse starts in the studio, when I start drawing. I fill in the entire format by adding up to three layers of black ballpoint pen until a mirror surface occurs. By filling the format, I subsequently reduce or empty the photo motif, so that it only becomes visible when the viewer takes on a certain perspective. But at the same time the mirror surface starts to reflect everything else in the room including the viewer and „turns full“ again.
I am interested in this Kippmonment when full turns into empty and back into full again, the temporary magic when these elements collide…
